A rare Expressionist painting by Wassily Kandinsky, Studie zu Improvisation 3, 1909, was auctioned for $21,157,438 or £13,501,875, on June 18 in London by Christie's. It was the most expensive item sold of 44 lots in the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale. It belongs to Kandinsky's revolutionary series of paintings, started earlier that year, known as 'Improvisations', which mark his first major forays into the realm of abstraction. In Nov. 2012, Kandinsky's Studie für Improvisation 8, 1909 set a record for the artist when Christie's sold it for $23 million.
